About us

We’re a welcoming and enthusiastic group of mountain lovers who enjoy the outdoors during midweek when the hills are quiet, accommodation is more available and parking spaces at the mountain hot-spots are easier to find.

We hold monthly residential meets during midweek, usually two bed-nights on Tuesday/Wednesday or Wednesday/Thursday, extending occasionally to three nights for more far-flung adventures.

We stay in club huts, bunkhouses and hostels, some of which are better appointed than others but which generally offer hot showers, well-equipped kitchens and often cosy communal areas.  Summer camping ventures are also on the agenda.

We also organise day meets that provide an ideal opportunity for prospective or new  members to meet others before booking on a residential meet.

Members also organise trips abroad, most recently tackling the via ferrata of the Italian Dolomites, ice climbing and ski touring in Norway and sport climbing in Spain.

We engage in most mountain activities and members also enjoy other pursuits such as cycling, sea kayaking and sailing. All are welcome, and don’t let age, gender or inexperience seem like a barrier. We are generally a mature bunch with a lot of hill miles and/or climbing under our belts and a helping hand awaits any newbies. That said, prospective members should be aware that we do not offer organised, leader/guide-led trips to the hills.

Because we are “national” – our membership stretches from Ross & Cromarty to London – we don’t have regular pub get-togethers like many other clubs. A group of us gathers at the EICA in Ratho on Thursdays for some indoor climbing and a chat over coffee, so please get in touch if you are in the area and would like to come along to meet us.

We are affiliated to Mountaineering Scotland, so members benefit from free third-party insurance, discounts at many outdoor stores and access to courses and mountain huts.

So, if you are able to get away midweek and looking for a route to the hills in friendly company, or are perhaps a retiree or lapsed devotee trying to get back into the outdoors, then the SMMC could be right up your street.

If interested, please contact the membership secretary, Martin Sheach, at scottishmmc@gmail.com for further information or register here
